Leslie spent the majority of her career in litigation support. When she decided to go back to school and complete her degree, she took on a job at a bank. After she’d finished her degree, she wanted to get back into her field and wasn’t sure how to tie in her recent experience to her career history. My goal was to help her tell the right story that would make sense to employers in her field.
We started by identifying and highlighting the skills Leslie used in her recent work that were transferrable to her target job. Then, I crafted a professional summary at the top that spoke to Leslie’s goals and qualifications.
In addition, the format of Leslie’s original resume wasn’t working for her. She used four different font types in a range of sizes, styles, and shades of gray and there was too much information crammed into the document, all of which made it really difficult to quickly scan her resume. I concentrated on giving her resume a clean, polished look so she’d have no problem passing the six-second resume test with recruiters.
